Broadband in St. Helens

The fibre build has landed unevenly. L35 leads, with fibre passing more than nine premises in ten, and L34 follows at 83%, yet the coverage data shows nothing so far in L39, WA9, WA10 or WA11. Averaged across 13 outward codes and 4,741 postcodes, full fibre availability comes out at 16.2%, well behind the UK figure of around 69%.

The gap matters less than it first appears. Gigabit-capable coverage, which counts cable network availability as well as fibre, reaches 88.4% of premises, so top-speed packages are widely on sale even where fibre has not arrived. Superfast coverage is 95.5%, slightly below the roughly 97% national average, and 1.7% of connections remain under 10 Mbps. Most St. Helens postcodes can buy fast broadband today. What varies from code to code is the technology delivering it.

For households the split creates two markets. In L35 and much of L34, fibre packages are the norm and choice is wide. In the codes without any fibre yet, the 88.4% gigabit figure means cable coverage usually fills the gap, but addresses outside both footprints drop straight to superfast or below. The 1.7% under 10 Mbps will feel that gap most keenly.
