Your moving timeline

Four weeks before you move

  • Check broadband availability at the new postcode. Installation lead times of two to four weeks are common, and full-fibre installs can take longer.
  • Compare providers and order broadband for your moving-in date, or arrange to transfer your current contract.
  • Look up the full postcode report for schools, GP surgeries and transport links so there are no surprises.
  • Give notice to your current landlord or confirm completion dates with your solicitor.

Two weeks before you move

  • Set up Royal Mail post redirection. It needs at least five working days to start.
  • Tell your council you are moving so council tax stops at the old address and starts at the new one.
  • Notify your bank, employer, DVLA and insurers of the new address.
  • Take note of the flood risk at the new postcode and check your buildings and contents insurance covers it.

Moving week

  • Take meter readings at both properties on moving day and photograph them.
  • Register with a GP surgery near the new postcode. The full report lists the closest ones and whether they accept new patients.
  • Confirm your broadband activation date and keep your old router until the new line is live.
  • Update your address for deliveries, subscriptions and the electoral roll.
