Broadband in Fenland

Gigabit-capable networks reach 76.1% of Fenland postcodes. That is the strongest number on the local scorecard, and it puts very high speeds within reach of most of the area. Superfast coverage tells a patchier story. At 92% of postcodes, Fenland trails the UK norm of roughly 97 per cent, so a meaningful minority still cannot get a standard superfast line. Then there is the slow tail. Some 3.5% of postcodes, about one in every thirty, record speeds below 10 Mbps. The dataset does not break out a separate full fibre figure for Fenland, so the gigabit number may reflect cable network coverage rather than fibre to the premises. In practice the area splits two ways: a well-served majority with fast options, and a small share still stuck on genuinely slow lines.

For households the divide is practical rather than subtle. A postcode inside the 76.1% gigabit footprint supports heavy streaming, video calls and large uploads without strain, and the decision becomes one of price. A postcode in the slow tail has far fewer options, and moving house across Fenland can mean a bigger change in broadband than in council tax band. The gap between the best-served and worst-served addresses here is wide.
