Ookla test data puts the average download at 289.1 Mbps, nearly four times the 75 Mbps typical of urban Britain, which points to fast packages being widely taken up rather than merely available. Availability backs it up. Superfast covers 97.4% of postcodes, right on the UK norm, and 91.1% have a gigabit-capable option. Full fibre is patchier at 27.8% of postcodes overall. LE16 is the clear leader, with fibre in nearly nine in ten of its postcodes, and LE15 follows at around three quarters, while PE8 and PE9 record none. The slow tail barely registers, at 0.8% of postcodes below 10 Mbps. For a district of 16 outward codes and 8,162 postcodes, that consistency is the more striking fact.

Fast averages change the practical question from whether you can get a good connection to which one to pick. Most households here choose between gigabit cable and, in fibre-served codes such as LE16, full fibre. A 289 Mbps average download leaves several simultaneous heavy users with room to spare. The exceptions are PE8 and PE9, where no full fibre is recorded and buyers should study the cable and superfast options instead.
