Gateshead's data points in one direction: fast connections for most, with a thin margin of exceptions. No standalone full fibre percentage is recorded here, so cable coverage may account for some or all of that figure.

Superfast availability of 94.5% falls a little short of the UK norm of roughly 97 per cent, which is the one place the area visibly trails the national picture. For most Gateshead households the availability question was settled some time ago; the open question is which of several fast options to pay for.

The shape of the market favours switchers. Where four in five postcodes can order gigabit tiers, providers are competing on price at the top end, and a household on an old superfast contract may find a faster deal for similar money at renewal. The 2% slow tail changes that arithmetic completely for the addresses in it, which is why the area average and the address-level reality deserve separate checks.
