The headline gap sits between gigabit availability and full fibre. Nearly three quarters of postcodes can order a gigabit-capable service, but only 6 per cent have fibre to the premises recorded, which points to cable network coverage doing most of the heavy lifting. Fibre build is concentrated in one corner of the coverage table. WS15 shows fibre at 70.9 per cent of its postcodes, while DE13, DE14 and DE15 record none at all. Superfast, at 92.5 per cent, runs a few points behind the UK norm of around 97 per cent of premises. The slow tail is modest rather than trivial. Some 3.3 per cent of postcodes cannot reach 10 Mbps, enough to matter if your address falls inside it. Eight outward codes make up the district, and the spread between WS15 and the DE codes shows how little the average reveals on its own.

For most households the practical choice is cable or nothing faster than superfast. Where the gigabit network runs, streaming and multi-person video calls are comfortably covered. Where it does not, a superfast line of 30 Mbps or better is the realistic ceiling, and 3.3 per cent of postcodes fall short of even 10 Mbps. Anyone planning to work from home in the DE13 to DE15 codes should test the exact address before committing to a move.
