Just over half of postcodes here, 55% on the current data, can take a gigabit-capable service. The other 45% cannot, and for them superfast is the realistic ceiling. Superfast itself holds up well at 94.3%, within a few points of the UK norm of roughly 97 per cent, and for most households that is the number that matters day to day.

The slow tail is the other part of the story. 2.5% of postcodes fall below 10 Mbps. Spread across 6,769 postcodes, that is a meaningful number of addresses where even standard streaming will strain. The gap between a DG postcode with gigabit and one below 10 Mbps is enormous, and nothing in the area-wide average will tell you which one you are looking at.

The useful lens for households is the speed split. Someone who mainly browses, streams one screen and takes work video calls will be fine in more than nine out of ten postcodes. Heavier users should target the 55% of postcodes with a gigabit option. And the 2.5% below 10 Mbps is worth screening out entirely, because at that speed remote work gets fragile.
