CH4 is the outlier. Full fibre there is recorded at 100% of postcodes, and SY14 and SY13 both sit near 75%. Then the list falls off a cliff: CH1, CH2 and CH3 show no full fibre at all. The area-wide share works out at 6.9%, a long way under the UK average of roughly 69% of premises passed. Gigabit tells a happier story. Four in five postcodes, 80.3%, can order a gigabit service, and superfast availability runs at 93.7%. The slow tail is modest too, with 1.7% of postcodes below 10Mbps. So most households can get real speed today, though usually over something other than fibre, and whether a fibre line is even possible depends heavily on the outward code.

House hunters here get a simple test. If the postcode starts CH4, full fibre is recorded throughout; if it starts CH1, CH2 or CH3, the data shows none. For everyone else the gigabit figure matters more, since 80.3% of postcodes have that option and only 1.7% sit below 10Mbps. Speed is rarely the problem. The technology behind it is what varies.
